Meeting people in Thonglor & Ekkamai

Thonglor and Ekkamai are where a lot of Bangkok's young professionals, creatives and expats go out. Here is how the area works and where conversations start.

The vibe

Thonglor (Sukhumvit Soi 55) and Ekkamai (Soi 63) run parallel from Sukhumvit Road, each with its own BTS station. The two streets and the small sois between them are packed with coffee shops, Japanese and fusion restaurants, cocktail bars, wine bars and a few rooftops. The crowd is mostly Thai professionals in their twenties and thirties, with a strong expat presence.

When to go

  • Late afternoon: cafés and co-working spots, an easy time for a first coffee date.
  • Early evening: terraces and rooftops fill up for sunset.
  • Thursday to Saturday nights: the busiest time in the bars, which is when HelloHere will be most useful.

Tips for meeting people here

  • Sit at the bar rather than a table: bartenders and neighbours make conversation easier.
  • Many venues have an alcohol-free menu worth trying. Ask for the house mocktail.
  • Places are close to each other, so a second spot within walking distance is an easy way to keep a good conversation going.
