Making friends as an expat in Bangkok
Moving to Bangkok is exciting, and it can also be lonely. The city is huge and everyone seems busy. Building a social circle takes a plan. Here is one that works.
Month 1: set up a base
- Choose a walkable neighbourhood near a BTS or MRT station: Ari, Phrom Phong, Thonglor or Sathorn are popular with newcomers.
- Pick one café and one gym and go at the same time every week.
- Say yes to everything for the first four weeks: dinners, meetups, birthdays of people you barely know.
Month 2: join two weekly things
- A sport: run club, Muay Thai, climbing, padel, football.
- A skill: Thai language class, cooking, photography, dance.
Weekly is the key word. Friendships grow from repeated, easy contact, not from one big night out.
Month 3: become the organiser
Invite three people you met to a dinner or a sunset drink. The person who organises is the person who gets invited back.
Meeting Thai friends
- Learn basic Thai. Even a few phrases change how people respond.
- Language exchanges are a two-way door: you help with English, they help with Thai.
- Be patient and polite. Thai social life values warmth, calm and respect.
Where HelloHere fits
HelloHere lets you choose "friendship" as well as "dating". In a partner venue, you can see who else is open to meeting new people tonight, and say hello in person.
